I was very nervous about having Surgery in Mexico. I am an RN in Surgery in the US and Immediately noticed equipment and pre-op procedural differences that gave me anxiety. The facility was very clean with beautiful white floors, clear of clutter. It was scary having the communication barrier. Many of my questions were misunderstood. I would strongly recommend taking someone with you that can translate if you don't speak or understand Spanish. That being said, the staff was very kind, very responsive to call lights attentive. I was in a considerable amount of pain for a day or 2 until they removed the penrose drain. The pain immediately went away at that point. They don't give oral narcotics there. I feel like patients in the US expect these things to be completely pain free and that is not the expectation there. Just prepare yourself. I did cry a handful of times at home the first month after surgery. It's very hard to train your brain to eat such small amounts of food because you miss wanting to taste and enjoy food. It's easy to eat too much too fast when you transition to solid food and it hurts. The weight loss is so encouraging but you have to train yourself to view food differently. You can't just guzzle water to stay hydrated, you have to make a conscious effort to take in food and nutrients that are going to fuel your body. Anyone who says that this is "an easy solution", hasn't gone through it. I don't feel like I could have lost the weight on my own without dealing with it the rest of my life. As I have gotten older with hormone and metabolism changes, it wasn't happening. I'm soo glad I did this. Just be mentally ready for the change. The weight loss definitely helps balance out the mental depression that comes with not finding enjoyment through food. I would recommend any of my friends and loved ones that are fighting weight problems to do this. Don't be afraid of going to This group of Doctors. They are very competent and do a great job!
