The Gastric Band is a surgical weight loss procedure. There are several banding devices, the most popular being the Lap Band, while another popular in Europe being the Cousin Bioring.
The procedure is most easily understood if you think of it like a big zip-tie, or a belt, that goes around the stomach, and adjusting it to just the right tightness. The result is a small pouch above the restricted area, which quickly fills with food when you eat. The idea is the patient will feel full much sooner when eating. The banding procedure is not well known to reduce production of the hunger hormone known as Ghrelin. Rather it works by reducing your appetite, so you lose your appetite when you realize you cannot eat so fast and need to slow down. The result is a patient who is pretty much forced to consciously think about what they're eating and how fast they're eating it, and hopefully make good choices. The devices have debatable success rates. Some people like it and have success with it, but some patients do return to have it removed, and often opt for the gastric sleeve instead. That type of procedure is called a Lap Band Revision To Sleeve and it's (unfortunately) quite popular with people who decided to get a lap band back before the sleeve was as popular as it is now. The feedback is generally people prefer the sleeve over the lap band. Some people do opt for the band for various reasons, however. You and your doctor can decide what's best for you.
